Confession: Sometimes...I skip to the end.
August 31, 2011

Sometimes…I skip to the end.

Of a book. A movie. Sometimes I like to know what’s going to happen before it happens.

In some cases, it’s because I want to know whether the story is going disturb me, and whether I want to spend 2 to 8 hours of my time invested in the plot. Other times, it’s simply a matter of enjoyment. If I know what’s coming, sometimes I actually like the storyline better, particularly if there is a significant amount of angst or suspense involved. This happens more often with books for me, likely because it takes longer than the 2 to 3 hours it takes to watch a movie in order to read them. If the novel is well written and the characters are experiencing a lot of angst, I tend to internalize that angst. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to feel nervous. So, if skipping to the end takes the edge off some of that anxiety, I find the story more pleasurable.

This, of course, drives my husband bonkers. I have to remind myself not to discuss the plot twists or the ending within his hearing lest I spoil his surprise. He wants to experience the story as it unfolds.

What about you? Do you ever skip to the end? Or do you hate it when someone reveals spoilers?
